From Heartbreak to Hope: Muslim Students Unite for Gaza’s Children

Across Canada, as people watch the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, acts of compassion are shining through especially from young Muslims who are turning heartbreak into hope.

Human Concern International (HCI), Canada’s first Muslim international relief organization, has been supporting families and orphans in Gaza for over 20 years. Recently, HCI partnered with Olive Grove School (OGS) in Mississauga– an Islamic school under the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) – to launch a student-led fundraising effort that became nothing short of inspiring.

For nearly two years, children and youth have been exposed to painful images of suffering in Gaza. Yet instead of growing numb, many have turned to their faith for strength. At Olive Grove, students from kindergarten to grade 12 channelled their empathy into action, raising an incredible $115,000, enough to sponsor 125 orphans in Gaza.

Principal Sarah Attia reminds students that giving in Islam is more than charity; Quoting the Qur’an, she tells them: “You will never attain righteousness until you give from that which you love.” (3:92) This message resonated deeply. Each classroom joined a friendly competition to see who could raise the most funds, not out of pride, but out of love and service to Allah.

At OGS and other MAC schools, students learn that generosity isn’t measured by wealth but by sincerity. Every donation, big or small, is an act of faith that connects giver and receiver through compassion.

For HCI, being entrusted with these funds was both humbling and uplifting. The organization is using the donations to provide shelter, food, and psychological support to children and their guardians in Gaza, practical help that restores dignity and hope.

In a world overwhelmed by pain, these students have shown what faith in action looks like: hearts guided by mercy, hands extended in service, and a belief that even small acts of kindness can change lives.
