Help Families in Gaza Endure Winter and Begin Rebuilding After the Ceasefire

The ceasefire has allowed a pause in violence, but families across Gaza are now confronting a new emergency: winter storms, widespread flooding, deteriorating sanitation, critical shortages, and mass displacement. For many, survival is growing harder by the day.

A Winter of Extreme Hardship

As temperatures drop, thousands of families are living in damaged or makeshift shelters that offer almost no defense against the cold. Heavy rainfall has swept through large parts of displacement camps, soaking belongings and leaving families exposed to freezing winds.

More than 1.9 million people remain displaced, and assessments estimate that 93% of tents, approximately 125,000, are no longer fit for living.

Recent flooding has affected over 18,600 households, pushing families who have already lost everything into deeper vulnerability. While around 48,000 winter clothing kits have reached communities since the ceasefire, needs far outweigh available assistance. Malnutrition is worsening, shelters are collapsing, and older adults, newborns, children, and people with disabilities face the most severe risks as conditions continue to deteriorate.

Voices From Gaza

Mustafa, 11, and his 5-year-old sister Aya, live in a tent in northern Gaza after their home was severely damaged during the war. They lost several family members and had no choice but to move to the camp, where the flimsy tent barely protects them from the cold wind and rain. Mustafa’s hands were red and cracked from the cold, and he could barely keep them warm. When he received a set of winter clothes, he smiled and said, “Alhamdulillah. This will help us stay warm. I believe we’ll go back home one day.” His calm acceptance and quiet strength were a reminder of how much he has been through at such a young age.
